Style: Love Your Lips.

“I can’t wear lipstick. It doesn’t look good on me.”

I hear this at least once every single time I go out with a bold lip color on. And let me just say, it makes me sad! Lipstick is one of my favorite trends right now, and can be absolutely transformative to a woman’s look, as well as her confidence.

The reasons that tend to be why people “can’t wear lipstick” are usually that they haven’t found the right color for them, are scared of trying something new, are afraid to stand out, or just don’t really like wearing makeup. Seeing as bold lips are a major fashion “do” right now I want you to feel confident and bold enough to go out and find the perfect lip… even for those who don’t think it’s possible.

My best solution to this issue… Try em on!! If you go to Sephora or Ulta, or even a MAC counter, the ladies there will be more than happy to help you find a perfect shade for your skin tone and lip shape. If you don’t feel like talking to the girls and having someone analyze your face, then go ahead and take over the sample station by yourself. I do it all the time! Try on three or four or eighteen different shades until you find one that you think might be working for you. (Make sure to sanitize and clean up your mess if you decide to go this route!) If you’re still questioning it, then wear it around the mall while you do the rest of your shopping. Check yourself out in every mirror you pass, no one’s judging 🙂  and see how you feel about it after an hour or two… If you’ve found the right color then most likely your lack of love for it at first is due more to the fact that you aren’t used to it than it actually not looking good on you.  You ARE beautiful, so wear something that makes you feel that way! Sometimes a bold lip is exactly what a girl needs!

The next trick is balance. I know you see all these girls and makeup artists on Instagram who have this insane eye and lip color going on… cat eyeliner halfway to their ears, false lashes hitting their eyebrows, and Kylie Jenner lips… and they somehow pull it off. But let’s be honest, it’s not very practical. I rarely find these looks to be good day to day wear. My life isn’t very conducive to applying false lashes daily, nor do I want lipstick up to my nose, just to make my lips look bigger. SO, a little word to the wise: pick one feature you want to accentuate. If you are going for a bold eye, then a nude lip or lighter color is a safe place to start. If you are going for a really bold deep lip, then balance out the eyes by going with less shadow and liner. A nude shadow with a subtle cat eye is a look that will never fail you when paired with a bold lip.

Now I don’t want to discourage you from being daring, because that’s kinda what this whole post is about, right? So feel free to stretch the limits a little. Find fun colors and figure out what pairings of eyes look good with them.

So what are some of my favorite colors this season? Why, I thought you’d never ask!

This is a great evening red. It has classic glam written all over it and pairs really well with a darker smokey eye, but also works well as being used to pop some daytime brightness into a more natural soft look.

I had been hunting for an eggplant color for a LONG time and finally found this one. It has a perfect red undertone but picks up some really pretty purples and browns too. Great with pinks and purples on your eyes and cheeks.

This is a great neutral pink. If you’ve never worn lip color, this one would be a great place to start because it adds a definite pop without being extremely bold.

An orange based red was really hard to find! I wanted something that was more orange than red, but without any pink in it and this pretty pencil is exactly what I was looking for. A very fun color to break up the typical reds and pinks.

This is my FAVORITE look this season. A deep dark red violet. It has almost this 80s grunge/ gothic look that I’m loving! At night I like it with a really dark lined eye. And for the day I like it with just a neutral shadow and mascara!

When applying your lip color make sure to line your lips with a really great lipliner first! This makes a HUGE difference in the longevity of your lipstick and can also be a useful tool in making your lips look a bit fuller. To get a fuller lip line your lips right on the outer edge of your lip, instead of where your natural lip color starts.  It gives you just a little extra oomph!

There are obviously a million trillion other colors out there, but these are some of my faves based on what looks good on my skin tone/ minimal reapply/ they feel good on my lips. What are some of your favorite colors this season? Let’s see you lovin your lips using #lovemylips2015! We can help you choose the right colors and share some favorites! With Love.

I was the same way a year ago, I only wore lip glosses with minimal color but now I am so obsessed with bold lips, especially a really dark red/brown color. My outfit never feels complete without a great lipstick

Doesn’t it feel incredible to be confident enough to rock something so bold! Now even my pinks feel so boring to me!

funny you should post this, my new years resolution was to wear more lipstick….even though I am a chap stick kind of girl, and think lipsticks look real funny on me, I have decided to just do it anyway. So what did I do but start out with a tinted chap stick…..its a start right?

Definitely a start!! I know I had a hard time with lip color for a long time because it always felt childish on me… Then I realized it was because I had been using dark lip glosses or shiny sticks. Once I switched to more of a matte finish I fell in love!

In my my many years selling high-end cosmetics, I became friends with the department manager of ladies shoes. We were told that areas unaffected by a slumping economy were lipstick sales and ladies shoe sales. We would always compare our numbers and found it to be true! There’s a reason for that!!
